The internet seems like a vast, endless, ever-expanding space that exists somewhere outside the physical realm. Our computers can magically “grab” any information we want from any part of the world and have it at our finger tips in a matter of seconds! It feels like magic! Believe it or not, the Internet actually occupies quite a bit of physical space—physical space outside of your personal computer. Everything you put onto the Internet is stored in a basic “storage facility” on a host that is connected to a server somewhere on the planet. A server is simply a computer program that transfers the content from computer to computer. This content is transferred by HTTP (or Hyper Text Transfer Protocol).

Here is what happens. You write an article that you think is pretty good, and you want to share it with other people in the world via the Internet. Well, that article needs to live somewhere, right? So you contact a web host. There are a ton of web hosting programs available. Some are free, some you have to pay for. This hosting program then gives you a name and a password and assigns you a certain amount of space on their servers. You use part of that space for your article. When you upload your article it is given a URL (Uniform Resource Locator). This URL is a map to your article.

Somebody else decides they want to read your article. So they connect to the Internet via their Internet service provider. They open up their web browser and type in the URL to your article and hit enter. Once you hit enter, a message is sent across the infrastructure of the Internet that tells your server that somebody wants to look at whatever is located at that URL. Your server then finds the data that is being requested and sends it along to the person requesting it.

Think of it as itty bitty robots running around in a huge storage facility filled with filing cabinets. You tell your robot what you want to see and where to find it. The robot goes and retrieves it for you. The URL is what tells the robot where to look for the information.

Each server can handle a certain amount of traffic safely. Bandwidth refers to the amount of traffic a server can receive before not being accessible to anybody else. Think of Bandwidth as a corridor. Once the corridor fills up, nobody else can get through and the corridor stops being safe.

When you host your information on a regular server, you have to share that server’s Bandwidth with everybody else who is hosted on that server. That means that if somebody else’s website gets too much traffic and overloads the bandwidth of the server, your site (as well as everybody else housed on that server) won’t be accessible for viewing until the amount of traffic gets back down to the regulatory rate.

You can choose, if you think your article is going to get a considerable amount of traffic, to house your article on a dedicated server.

If you want to let more people look at your information, you can choose to be hosted on a dedicated server. This server and its resources solely belong to you. Of course this is often much more expensive, but as time goes on, you might decide that it’s the right choice.

Question: How does this relate to SEO?

Well, search engines evaluate your website according to many parameters. One of those parameters is the server response time, that is, how long does it take for the server to retrieve the content once requested. The longer is the response time the more search engines will downgrade your website. Therefore if you managed to build up your website traffic, do not let a low quality server or a non-dedicated server be a hindrance. Bottom line, choose your website hosting company wisely and do not let a simple technical matter be a problem.
